43 dead in bus crash in Argentina

An Argentine bus plummeted about 65 ft off a bridge today in Rosario de la Frontera, killing 43 people. The passengers were mostly from the Argentine National Gendarmerie, the national police for domestic security and border patrol. Authorities say 51 people were on board, and the remaining injured survivors were taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities believe a tire on the bus ruptured and the accident was not caused by just the poorly maintained rural roads. Rescue efforts were delayed and difficult as the bodies had to be retrieved by a large crane because the bus was at the bottom of the river. The passengers were mostly from the Argentine National Gendarmerie, the national police for domestic security and border patrol.

“This is a tragedy. We are going to make sure the gendarmes are better equipped,” said security minister Patricia Bullrich.

In 2012, a dozen gendarmes were killed in accident in the southern province of Chubut when their bus collided with a truck.
