Migrant Boat Crashes Off Libyan Coast

August 27, 2015

Two boats have sunk off the coast of Libya today, with the official death count now over one hundred.

The two vessels, which contained as many as 500 migrants traveling from Syria and Bangladesh, issued distress calls early Thursday morning. Libyan coastguard workers have attempted to rescue the passengers, but recent reports indicate that most are feared dead.

Nearly 2,500 migrants, many of whom are workers seeking better opportunities, have died at sea this year in attempts to reach Europe, according to the UN.
